Full Band Bio

Echo Sparks was formed in 1923, deep in the mines of Cerro Gordo near the shores of Owens Lake. DA Valdez fashioned a cigar-box guitar, Cindy sacrificed her only washtub for a bass, and Colleen honed her harmonies with the coyotes.

OK, those are all lies. Here’s the truth. Sort of.

Echo Sparks’ music is an eclectic mix of Americana styles they half-jokingly refer to as “Mexifolkabilly.” They are inspired by the quiet back roads of California’s farmlands and desolate corners, which they translate into harmonies that break hearts and tunes that move feet. Their latest full album release, “Ghost Town Girl” has had radio play across North America and has garnered rave reviews (including two write-ups in No Depression).

The band is led by multi-instrumentalist DA Valdez, whose songwriting perspective is influenced by his time spent growing up in Mexico and Southern California. DA honed his crafts as a co-founding member of the internationally acclaimed touring artists The Pontiac Brothers. DA plays lead guitar, sings and shares harmonies, as well as providing drums and percussion on the Echo Sparks Recordings. DA’s influences are many and varied and include the Flying Burrito Brothers, Ryan Adams and The Clash.

Echo Sparks’ distinct vocal blend is anchored by multitalented frontwoman Colleen Kinnick. A California girl who grew up in the dairylands of the Inland Empire, she taught herself to sing by matching the harmonies on Beatles albums, aiming for the high notes in operas, and singing in the church choir. Her wide vocal range and even wider pool of vocal influences (Nina Simone, Siouxsie Sioux and Gillian Welch for starters) takes Echo Sparks’ sound to unexpected places. Colleen also plays rhythm guitar plus a little percussion, and does artwork for many of the band’s projects.

Cindy Ballreich plays stand-up bass for the trio, rounding out the signature sound by providing the percussion and melody lines all at once! Cindy was raised in the Central Valley farmlands of California surrounded by the West Coast Country Music environment, influenced by the music of Buck Owens and Rose Maddox. She plays several instruments and helps to co-write songs for the band. Cindy is also involved in recording and engineering the band’s signature sound, as well as designing cover art for our albums.

Together, the trio’s wide range of influences allows them to put a refreshing perspective on roots music that is enjoyed by music fans everywhere.

What Does The Name "Echo Sparks" Mean?
Please select from the following choices...

  • A rare piezoelectric phenomenon wherein a series of sound waves passes through a crystal and is reflected back through the crystalline matrix with enough harmonic energy to create a visible static discharge.
  • The 666 mile distance from Echo Oregon to Sparks Nevada.
  • A rare (possibly mythical) phenomenon in which multiple harmonic sound frequencies (such as vocal harmony) strikes a surface with a high mineral content causing sympathetic vibrations that create sparks as the sound waves are reflected back to the sound source
  • A name DA made up that sounded like the music in his head and which had not been previously used by other bands.
